ARCHITECTS FROM LIMA
51-1 is another way of referring to Lima (it is actually Lima's dialling code) and in many ways our work is deeply connected to this city and its highly distinct conditions.

ENVIRONMENT

The temperature never rises
above 28°C or falls below 14°C; architecture does not need to create thermal
insulation. It has a predominantly cloudy sky that diffuses light, and a sun
that leans northward in winter and southward in summer, making daytime hours
the same all year round. Architecture does not require a determinant
orientation, nor major shadows or light. It never rains and there are no
storms, so the architecture does not need to take precautions towards water,
equally, this means that green areas are not taken for granted, and are a
precious asset. Lima is a desert that took 1000 years of irrigation to be
converted into a green valley; nevertheless, in the last 50 years it has been
entirely urbanized over a concrete slab. In Lima, an architecture that
generates green spaces is not a silly fashion, but as necessary as a toilet.

ECONOMY

Construction (and all the
economy) had been stagnant for decades, but since founding 51-1 (2005) it has
grown 15% per year in an exponential real-estate boom. In recent years, there
has been a lot of work available in Lima, however with construction budgets
that are less than half those of our neighbouring countries, our architecture
needs to be ingenious and recursive to solve its materiality. Having developed
in an intensely informal culture (60%), the capacity to adapt has proven much
more important than the efficiency of getting from A to B. Due to this,
together with the absence of weather restrictions, we focus on generating a
strong conceptual framework related to the program and context, so as to
maintain the integrity of each of our projects.

AGENDAIn Lima, the private world is dominant, not only in the prospect of generating commissions, but also in the general idea of privatizing everything. As architects, we find ourselves constantly struggling for public space and even against public institutions (!). The defence of the common good is not assured by the regulations and most of the time, it is only supported by our ability to create it through our projects. In the context within which we work, we've found that it is essential to have an agenda that not only defines a work ethic, but that equally acts as a fundamental creative tool.

ROLE

Instead of specialising, it
is our interest to expand the range of our work in all directions, simultaneously:
Urban Planning, Design, Teaching, Landscaping, Activism, Construction, Art,
Real Estate Promotion, the hectare scale (1:10000) and the millimetre scale
(1:1), the commercial order and the pro-bono, a lot of humour, and research, a
lot of research! We only know how to get there working as a team. 51-1 strives
to be more than the sum of its individual parts; it aims for the unification of
the team and is constantly developing a working method as opposed to a style.
The team is not only local and in-house, but also works with strong
collaborations from all over, especially with the fellow bases of the
collective Supersudaca.

	OFFICE PROFILE

51-1 is an architecture studio based in Peru (51), Lima (1).
Since its founding in 2005, they have worked on dozens of projects worthy of awards and recognitions, with their work being published in the most relevant international journals. Currently, they work on projects in Peru as well as in the United Arab Emirates.

51-1 is one of the studios that make up the collective Supersudaca (supersudaca.org), who have bases (in addition to Peru) in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Belgium. As members of Supersudaca, they cooperate actively in research, workshops, lectures and design projects all over the world. They have received important recognitions such as First Prize in the IV Iberoamerican Architecture Biennale (2004), for the research on Lima’s Experimental Housing Project (PREVI), and Best Entry Award at II International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (2005), for the study on Massive Tourism impact in the Caribbean. In 2009, ICON magazine considered them among `the 20 architects that will change the future’.

51-1’s offices are located in a classic modernist building overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Miraflores (Lima, Peru). There, partners Cesar Becerra, Fernando Puente Arnao & Manuel de Rivero, lead a team of 9-12 people in a structure of project leaders, designers, interns and administratives.

	Kalba Ice Factory

Kalba, Sharjah, UAE
(2017-2023)

On UAE’s East Coast, amidst the rugged Hajar Mountains lies the town of Kalba, on the Gulf of Oman. There, an abandoned building with a distinctive saw-tooth shaped roof, made from corrugated metal and an open concrete frame has been acquired by Sharjah Art Foundation in 2015.

Known as The Ice Factory, the building is a former fish feed mill that was subsequently used by local fisherman to store ice. It is located next to Kalba creek and the Al Qurm
mangrove swamp reserve, home to species unique to the area are like the endangered Arabian-Collard Kingfisher, the French-toad lizard, the Blandford’s lizard, the Mudcreeper as well as endangered hawksbill and green turtles, which nest on the nearby beach.

The project designed by 51-1, consists of a series of interventions in the Factory and the addition of new facilities to turn the whole site of 20,000sqm into a cultural centre for Kalba:

The Factory
A strategic and careful refurbishing of the abandoned factory is proposed, with the minimum
level of intervention to allow temporary art installations in its naves without losing its powerful spatial qualities as an industrial ruin.

The Workshop
An existing 200sqm structure in front of the factory is refurbished to accomodate workshop spaces for artists.

The Creek Side
On the factory’s blind facade
facing the creek, an additional volume following the same profile will be built. There existing office spaces adjoining the factory, are replaced by 6 different apartments -with stunning views towards the creek and the Al Qurn reserve- can host from an artist studio to a visiting family. Also in this volume is located the information kiosk, toilets, a snack bar, tribunes and platforms for events and contemplation of the beautiful surrounding landscape of the Oman sea to the East, the Kalba mangroves to the South and the Hajar mountains at sunset. Its lateral facades are cladded with protective ceramic hexagonal tiles inspired by local turtle eggs.

The Shaded Walkway
On the back side of the factory, a long shaded pathway is built to connect it to the bank of the creek. Its alignment of 13 degrees in relation to the shoreline causes the
water to slowly reveal itself as one approaches to the end. This structure hosts a restaurant that exploits as much as possible the view of the mangroves.

The Garden
Between the restaurant and the road, an edible garden is planted with a serie of spaces to
have outdoor cooking, dining, playing and praying (a praying pavilion is built inside). This also acts as a buffer green space form the neighboring shopping mall recently built across the road.

The Tree Line
In order to connect the different components of the cultural centre, a meandering line of Neem treesare planted along the plot stretching from its two car parking ends.

Comunidad de Religiosas de Maria InmaculadaJesus María, Lima (2019-2022)

During the Spanish colony, convents were considered a sign of the city's opulence and proof of the quality of its neighbors. Lima housed up to thirteen cloistered convents and monasteries occupying about a fifth of its surface. The convents were cities within cities that allowed the nuns to live a mixed life between contemplation and active apostolate (charity and teaching). They contained some chapel, refectories, dining rooms, a chapter house, cells, isolated outdoor spaces, as well as kitchens, storage and orchards.
Although there are fewer than a dozen convents in contemporary Lima and the population of nuns has dwindled considerably, they are still active in a contemplative and apostolic role. The Congregation of Religiosas de María Inmaculada -founded in Madrid by St. Vicenta María López Vicuña in 1876- entrusted us with the design of its new premises. In addition to being a residence for the religious community, it must also serve for its intense work, welcoming and training young girls in vulnerable situation as well as its neighboring community.
Given the contemporary condition of reduced land, the new convent rises vertically: a two-level public basement that contains the chapel, the training workshops and the auditorium. A private intermediate level with refectories and meeting rooms. Three levels with residences for young women and nuns. A roof terrace with laundry rooms, an orchard and recreational areas.

	MAMM
Medellin, Colombia (2009-2016)Museum Extension, In Collaboration with CTRL-G

When we were invited to design the extension for the
Museum of Modern Art in Medellin (MAMM), we were fascinated with the recent urban regeneration process of the informal barriadas of the city, where the formal city had “exported” their infrastructure (metrocable, stairs, parks, libraries) into these hillside districts of Medellin. With this in mind, we decided it was time that the vitality and flexibility of those barriadas was “imported” into the rigidity of the newborn Ciudad Del Rio, where our project is located.
As in the informal city of stacked houses in the hills, where one’s roof is the upstairs neighbour’s terrace, the new MAMM is laid out as a cascade of connected terraces open to the public. Inside, the blocks are a sequence of spaces displaying artwork; outside, they create a public realm that is continuous up to the fifth floor. With the combination of both, multiple new ways to display the art emerge.Open to the public since September 2015, the museum has been quickly adopted as a favorite place by an audience of different ages and interests, improving urban equity. The MAMM Expansion is now an alternative meeting point to the ubiquitous shopping malls of Medellin, thus a step further towards a culturally vibrant city. Six thousand people come to the independent outdoor cinema per night and more than one hundred thousand visited the museum in its first year. Renowned Colombian writer Hector Abad Faciolince praised the new MAMM and considered it as the symbol of the new Medellin Cartel...now based on C(iencia) ARTE and L(iteratura).

Gastronomy School PUCPSan Miguel, Lima (2016-2019)

We were asked to design the new Gastronomy & Hospitality School next to a palm garden in the extensive campus of Universidad Católica del Peru. We wanted to make the building as compact as possible, taking up the least amount of land, but also concentrating the program for maximum interaction between students. Three stories high and a basement, host all the needed program of classrooms, workshops and chambers conveniently supplied by sophisticated equipment and ducting.

The building is conceived as a gastronomic machine to train the students: everything is bluntly exposed seeking the maximum transparency and traceability. By the mere fact of spending enough time in the school, students will become fully aware of all the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems required for the operation. How the water and gas gets to your kitchen station? How does electricity reaches the light lamp? Where does the waste or grease ends up? Even the construction process is exposed by only plastering or cladding those walls or floors required for sanitary purposes. So if a wall was made out of brick or gypsum or cast in place concrete, you will notice.

Complementing the technical training with botanical knowledge, the western sun façades house a vertical edible orchard with numerous planters that show the students different species and how food is actually grown… just by climbing stairs or going from one class to the other. The school’s building is in itself a learning device.

The overall image of the gastronomy school building ends up being the blunt result of equipments and edible plants. A ‘machine-à-cuisiner’.
